Text: 1 Corinthians 3: 16-23
Describe the state of the world and how people are calling it “Hell on Earth”. each side of the office is claiming to be “Hell bent” on creating change…which unfortunately seems to bring more mess. people at war, being threatened by “Hell Raisers”. It would seem like life is looking more and more like a living “”.
Tell the story of Jesus clearing the temple (creates urgency)
explain the importance of the Temple. It was the place where God and Man meet.
It was the time of Passover. def: The people of Israel’s celebration of deliverance from Egypt
traveling there was a task. it was a sacrifice within itself to travel there. many travelers would take a week off of work just to be there and ensure that they were able to be purified
2 million people have been recorded being there around this time.
some people would come too far to bring animals, also, they had to be without blemish. they would sell the animal at home then bring the money. the priests understood this and took advantage of this opportunity to unfairly price these animals. ALSO the money changers were in on it as well. They wouldnt accept foreign coin ex. Roman money). BELIEVERS THAT KNOW THE LAW AND OPERATE FROM A PLACE OF PRIVILEGE WERE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF FOREIGNERS THAT HAD LITTLE, KNEW LESS , AND NEEDED THE MOST. PRAYER, FORGIVENESS, AND PURIFICATION.
Jesus was furious and drove them all out! and said that this is a place of prayer, not a place of business!
Explain the Text 1 Cor. 3:16-23 give background and define the “New Temple” and its relevance in the text. (Paul is Saying “GET THE HELL OUT!”
who is Paul Talking to? The Church of Corinth
Paul asks them to renounce all worldly wisdom, all humanism(man-centered philosophy), even if it means being called a fool. If one is not willing to be considered a fool by those who value only human wisdom, they will never be able to truly become wise.
Focus on God and re-align yourself with his Teachings because he is True wisdom. (see Job 5 for cross reference of verse 20)
in short, Paul is instructing the believers on how to get the Hell out!
define what “Hell” is, in context. matthew 16: 13-28;
The Gates of Hell are a representation of opposition against God and His Will ( when Jesus states that he must be fulfill His father’s will and Jesus tells Peter “get behind me Sa-tan! (“Opposition”) sa'-tan (saTan), "adversary," from the verb saTan, "to lie in wait" (as adversary); Satan, Satanas, "adversary," diabolos, "Devil," "adversary" or "accuser," kategor (altogether unclassical and unGreek) (used once in Re 12:10), "accuser")
WHAT ARE YOU HOLDING WITHIN YOUR TEMPLE?: Just because its “good” doesn't mean its “GOD”: The different things we take on in life and the hold they have on us.
you can have things but they cannot be greater than God…or maybe youve chosen that to be your God? try and maneuver thru life (the crowd) using Man’s methodology. its in direct opposition to God’s will for His Temples (The Church). when you decided to form this relationship you were reborn under the new covenant where it is in YOU that God’s Spirit is to dwell. you are to be the vessel for his light. IT’s time to get the HELL OUT
How to get the Hell out of your Temple? 5S Your life! (define and relate) its to reverse the effects of neglect on your temple.
